Houston defeats FC Kansas City 2-1 for first away victory in the series

Second half goals from Chioma Ubogagu and Denise O’Sullivan helped Houston pick up its first road win of the season with a 2-1 victory over FC Kansas City.

O’Sullivan came on as a substitute at halftime for the second consecutive game and scored her first goal of the season in the 69th minute. Ubogagu ran to the touchline and found O’Sullivan after she flipped the ball over the top of a defender as the forward made a run into the six yard box. The Cork, Ireland native slotted the ball in the far post for the lead.

A minute later O’Sullivan found Rachel Daly at the edge of the box and threaded a ball to Ubogagu between two defenders. The Stanford product brushed off a tackle and beat FCKC goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart at the near post.

FCKC cut the lead in half at the 87th minute after the referee awarded a penalty for a hand ball by a Dash defender inside the box. Yael Averbuch scored from the penalty spot and it was her first goal of the season.

Daly led an early charge and had the first shot of the game in the 1st minute. The forward dribbled into the box and shot at the near post but her shot missed the corner and went out of play.

Dash Lydia Williams finished the night with five saves and kept calm despite the pressure from FCKC’s Many Laddish and Shea Groom. A lunging Williams denied Groom’s header in the 18th minute after a stretch of possession that allowed FCKC to get behind the Dash defense on more than one occasion.

Laddish tested Williams with a long-range shot in the 20th minute but the Dash keeper palmed the ball over the goal for a corner kick.

Three minutes later Daly found Allysha Chapman making a run into the box and shot on goal. Barnhart’s left foot denied Chapman at the near post.

Barnhart was called into action in the 65th minute after Daly found space at the edge of the box. The forward shot towards the far post but the keeper’s right hand redirected the ball out of play.

Andressa’s shot in the 71st minute was just wide of the goal but forced Barnhart to palm it out of play. In the resulting corner kick, Ellie Brush tried to score her second goal in the series off a header. Barnhart was well positioned to handle the ball as she dove to her left.

The Dash return to BBVA Compass Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20 to host Alex Morgan and the Orlando Pride in what will be the first of two trips to Houston for the NWSL’s newest franchise. For tickets and additional information, visit HoustonDashSoccer.com/tickets.
