OL Reign vs. Houston Dash

2021 NWSL Challenge Cup group match

Friday, April 16 – 9:00 p.m. CST

Paramount+ & Twitch (International)

Here are the three key points ahead of tonight’s game:

1.       HOUSTON LOOKS FOR BACK-TO-BACK VICTORIES OVER OL REIGN: One of the milestones for Houston in their 2020 Challenge Cup title run took place on July 4th with a 2-0 over OL Reign and former Dash co-captain Amber Brooks. Houston got on the board first after midfielder Kristie Mewis pounded a left-footed shot into the net off a backheel pass from midfielder Shea Groom. The Texas A&M alum delivered more fireworks after she flew into the air and headed a ball into the back of the net past the Reign goalkeeper. The exciting victory was the second in club history against the Reign.

2.       DASH CONTINUE CHALLENGE CUP DEFENSE: Last year, the Dash brought home the first trophy and title in club history when they defeated the Chicago Red Stars on July 26 to become the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup champions. In the Cup final at Zions Banks Stadium, Houston put on a lights-out show in the 2-0 victory. After opening the tournament with a draw against Chicago, Houston will look to earn the first victory of the 2021 edition of the tournament tonight at Cheney Stadium.

3.       GROOM AND NAUGHTON LEAD THE TEAM: As the 2021 Olympic Games approach, six Houston players were called in for international duty in Europe. Goalkeeper Jane Campbell and Mewis were called into the USWNT roster to play a pair of friendlies in Sweden and France, while Canadians Allysha Chapman, Nichelle Prince and Sophie Schmidt played against Dash forward Rachel Daly and England Women’s National Team in England. With co-captains Campbell and Daly out with their respective countries, defender Katie Naughton and midfielder Shea Groom will serve as co-captains on Friday with the goal of earning three points to climb to the top of the table.
