For the second straight year, Dynamo Trials finalists were evaluated by first-team coaches in a game against the Dynamo Academy, and for the second straight year, the Academy came out on top.

In the showcase game of Dynamo Trials 2009 Wednesday night at the Carl Lewis Track & Field Complex at the University of Houston, the Dynamo Academy breezed past the Dynamo Trials squad 5-0. In last year’s game, the Academy won by a 3-1 margin.

Dynamo Director of Youth Development James Clarkson said he would confer with the first-team coaches and inform Trials players next week if any have been invited to train with the Dynamo.

The Dynamo Academy opened the scoring in the 24th minute when a long ball from right back Matt Boullt (Fort Bend Clements) found Josue Garcia (San Jacinto J.C.) in the box, and he was pulled down by his shirt. Pana Vasquez (SMU) easily converted the penalty kick with a low shot to the right side of the net.

The Trials team had a golden chance to tie the game in the 30th minute, when substitute Darwin Perez flashed a header on goal, but Academy goalkeeper Pat Wall (Strake Jesuit) dove to tip the shot over the bar. From there, it was all Academy, with midfielder Steven Salinas (Katy Mayde Creek) making it 2-0 in the 38th minute with a run down the left and a curling shot to the right side netting.

In the second half, the Academy’s endurance and teamwork served to increase the gap between the clubs. Trials goalkeeper Lucas Simon (St. Thomas), a guest player, tipped over a free kick from the Academy’s Mateo Jimenez (Spring Woods) in the 58th minute to keep it a 2-0 game, but the Academy made it 3-0 a minute later when Jimenez’s corner kick found net off of a Trials defender.

The Academy wrapped up the game with goals from Carlos Recinos (Coastal Carolina) off an assist from Gambian guest player Boubacar Cisse in the 67th minute and a mazy run from Sebastean Bahos (Katy Seven Lakes) in the 83rd minute.

The Dynamo Academy is next in action with the Dynamo Elite Camp, a tryout for next year’s U-18 and U-16 teams in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, June 8-11, and games against FC Dallas June 13 and June 20. The Dynamo Trials are over for the 2009 season.
