HOUSTON (Sept. 20, 2026) – 10-man Houston Dynamo 2 fell 3-2 to Sporting Kansas City II in a back-and-forth affair at SaberCats Stadium on Decision Day. Despite the result, Dynamo 2 still holds the upper hand in the all-time series versus Kansas City II with a 7-5-1 (W-L-D) record.
Dynamo 2 finished the regular season as the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference heading into the MLS NEXT Pro 2026 Playoffs, while making history during this camping by setting a single-season team record with 52 points in a season, surpassing the previous record of 49 points set during the Dos’ inaugural season in 2022. Dos also tied the team’s single-season wins record (14), which was also set during their inaugural year.
Houston played the final seven minutes of today’s match with 10 men after Dynamo 2 debutant GabrielWilliam received his second yellow card of the match following a foul in the 83rd minute mark.
The Decision Day match also saw forward Austin Brummett score his fifth goal and record his second brace against Kansas City II this season, bringing his regular-season total to 13 goals. He finished the season tied for fifth in the league in goals scored and as Dynamo 2’s leading goal scorer.
SKCII took the lead in the 10th minute when Zamir Loyo Reynaga found the bottom right corner with a left-footed shot, following a pass from Missael Rodriguez.
Dynamo 2 leveled the match in first half stoppage time when midfielder Gilberto Rivera played Brummett through towards the box. The American took one touch into the box before calmly finding the bottom left corner. The play marked Rivera’s second assist of the season.
The visitors retook the lead in the 58th minute after Shane Donovan received a ball from Blaine Mabie and dribbled towards the box before finding Roriguez inside the box for the finish.
Brummett equalized for Houston again in the 73rd minute after capitalizing on a loose ball inside the box. Attacker Samir Mohammad began the attack and laid the ball off to defender Vinicius Silva, who then forced a pass toward the center of the box that was deflected by a SKCII defender.
SKCII scored their third and final goal in the 87th minute when Tega Ikoba found the back of the net following a loose ball inside the box.
Dynamo 2 generated their first scoring opportunity quickly in the third minute when Rivera hit the crossbar with a powerful shot from the top of the box.
Houston came close again three minutes later after attacker Mattheo Dimareli found defender ChibuikeUkaegbu inside the box for a header that nearly found the inside of the far post, forcing a save from Kansas City II goalkeeper Brady Krysiewicz.
Goalkeeper Roman Kerimov was called into action in the 22nd minute, diving low to his right to deny Rodriguez’s right-footed from inside the box. The shot stopper finished the match with three saves.
Midfielder Noah Betancourt nearly found the back of the net in the 54th minute after Brazilian midfielderGustavo Dohmann found the streaking Betancourt at the top of the box. He fired a shot just wide to the right that struck the post.
