HOUSTON (July 26, 2026) – Houston Dynamo 2 played in-state foe Austin FC II to a 1-1 draw at SaberCats Stadium tonight and claimed the two points following a crucial save from reigning Goalie Wars champion Pedro Cruz, who dove to his left to deny Austin's fifth penalty. Attacker SamirMohammad stepped up and scored the final penalty kick of the evening to secure Houston's third shootout victory of the season.
The result marks the second time Houston defeats the in-state rivals in a penalty
shootout this year, drawing 1-1 on the road earlier this season and claiming the two
points after Cruz made a key save, while Gavin Wolff converted that would be the
match-winning penalty as Austin missed their sixth and final attempt.
Notably, Houston's unbeaten home streak now stands at eight matches, the longest
home run in team history.
Dynamo 2 took the lead in the 25th minute after forward Arthur Sousa found the inside
of the far post for his fourth goal of the season. Midfielder Matthew Arana started the play, retrieving his blocked shot with a header to defender Reese Miller inside the box. The 22-year-old then played a quick pass to the Sousa, who finished with a left-footedstrike towards the bottom right corner. Miller earned his third assist of the season on the play. Additionally, Sousa has scored two goals in the last three matches.
Austin leveled the match in the 86th minute when Christian Ayala found the back of the
net inside the box, following a pass from Patrick Cayelli.
Cruz, who will participate in this year's Goalie Wars at the 2026 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge, delivered two key saves within seconds in the fifth minute of the match. The play began with a left-footed volley from the middle of the box by Jorge Alastuey that Cruz quickly reacted to deny before rushing off his line to block a follow-up shot from CJ Fodrey. The Brazilian shot stopper finished the match with three saves.
Striker Austin Brummett tried his luck from outside the box in the 54th minute with a
powerful low-driven shot that missed the far post by inches.
Houston had another shot from distance in the 62nd minute when Sosua fired a right-
footed ball towards goal, forcing the Austin goalkeeper to get up high to block it away for a Dynamo 2 corner.
Brummett nearly doubled Dos' lead in the 85th minute when Mohammad won the ball
back following an Austin error and found Sousa inside the box. The Brazilian forward
then laid it off to Brummett at the top of the box, where he forced a diving save from the
Austin goalkeeper.
Houston next travel to face Sporting Kansas City II Friday, July 31, at Victory Field at
