ST. LOUIS (Aug. 23, 2026) – Houston Dynamo 2 will make their fourth MLS NEXT Pro Playoff appearance after clinching a postseason berth Sunday night with a 2-2 draw at St. Louis CITY2 and claiming the two points in the penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Logan Erb delivered back-to-back crucial saves on the third and fourth penalties, while forward Arthur Sousa converted the final penalty kick to secure Houston's fourth shootout victory.
The feat makes Houston the third team in the Western Conference to qualify for this year's playoffs.
Notably, tonight's match saw defender Chibuike Ukaegbu make his Dynamo 2 debut and his first start in orange after joining the team earlier this week.
Dynamo 2 took the lead in the 17th minute after capitalizing on a St. Louis error near the top of the box. Striker Austin Brummett pressured the hosts' backline and forced a misplaced pass, allowing Brummett to collect the ball before calmly finishing into the bottom right corner for his 10th goal of the season.
Dos extended their lead in the 47th minute following another CITY2 mistake that resulted in an own goal from Miguel Perez. The St. Louis midfielder attempted to play a back pass to his goalkeeper, but the ball instead ended up in his own net.
CITY2 pulled one back in the 70th minute when Perez's free kick was redirected by Riley Lynch to the middle of the box, where Nighte Pickering finished with a left-footed shot.
St. Louis equalized in the 85th minute when a lose ball from their corner landed in front of Zack Lillington for a header.
Houston's first shots on goal came in the fifth minute, with defender Vinicius Silva striking first with a left-footed blast from long distance that forced CITY2 goalkeeper Colin Welsh to punch the shot away. Seconds later, attacker Mattheo Dimareli connected with a pass from midfielder Gustavo Dohmann, curling a shot that forced Welsh to make a diving save.
Dimareli had another dangerous chance in the 32nd minute, firing a left-footed longe-range shot towards the bottom right corner, but Welsh denied the effort with a diving save.
Erb was called into action in the 36th minute, rising high to tip over Jack Wagoner's shot from outside the box over the crossbar.
