Notably, Houston can clinch their spot in the MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs on Sunday if they earn one or more points in the match against St. Louis.
Sunday's fixture marks the third and final meeting between the two sides this season, with Dynamo 2 earning a 4-1 victory at St. Louis in May before securing a 2-1 home victory in July. The first meeting against CITY2 featured four different players finding the back of the net, including attacker Mattheo Dimareli, midfielder Noah Betancourt, forward Jahmani “JJ” Bell and striker Austin Brummett. Notably, the four-goal performance earned the team MLS NEXT Pro Team of Matchweek 10 honors. In the second match, defender Reese Miller and forward Arthur Sousa were the two goalscorers to help the team secure another victory over St. Louis.
Dos are coming off a 1-1 home draw to San Jose Earthquakes II on Wednesday night, falling on penalties. Defender Vinicius Silva scored his fourth goal of the season in the ninth minute, while Sousa recorded his fourth assist of the year on the play.
The match also saw midfielder Vitor André make his first professional start after signing with the team earlier this month.
CITY2 are coming off a 2-0 victory at San Jose Earthquakes II on Aug. 16 and have posted a 2-1-2 (WLD) record since facing Dynamo 2 on July 11. The team currently sits fifth in the Western Conference with 38 points and a 9-7-7 (WLD) overall record. Palmer Ault leads the team's attack with eight goals and seven assists.
Dynamo 2 opened the 2026 season with a team-record 11-match unbeaten streak, where they recorded 31 points, 28 goals and 20 assists, while leading in fewest goals conceded in open play (four) during that span. All that was despite a league-record 10-match road trip that stretched from March to July due to DR Congo calling SaberCats home during the FIFA World Cup 2026™.
Houston opened the season with a team record nine-match unbeaten streak, recording eight victories and one draw. The run included a four-match home winning streak to open the season, as well as a three-match home winning streak to begin July.
Additionally, Aug. 14 marked the first time Houston was held scoreless this campaign, ending a 20-match scoring streak in which the team found the back of the net at least once in every game.
This week, Dynamo 2 acquired defender Chibuike Ukaegbu on a full transfer from Sacramento Republic FC in the USL Championship. The U.S. Youth National Team defender totaled 46 appearances with Republic FC and helped them record 19 clean sheets during his time with the club. He played a key role in helping them reach the playoffs in each of his first two seasons, as the team finished fifth in 2024 and second in 2025 in the Western Conference.
