Houston’s BBVA Stadium will play host to a semifinal matchup in the 2021 Leagues Cup featuring LIGA MX powers UNAM Pumas and León on Wednesday, September 15, Major League Soccer and LIGA MX announced this morning.
The León-Pumas semifinal match will go on sale to the public on Thursday, August 19 at 10 a.m. local via Seatgeek.com and BBVAstadium.com. The other semifinal will feature Seattle Sounders SC of Major League Soccer playing host to Santos Laguna of LigaMX on Tuesday, September 14. More information, including the Leagues Cup bracket, is available at LeaguesCup.com.
This marks the second time that BBVA Stadium was selected as the venue for an all-LIGA MX semifinal in the tournament, after hosting a sellout Leagues Cup semifinal between Club América and Tigres in 2019, the inaugural year of the event. The Leagues Cup Final is scheduled for September 22 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Leagues Cup, the official annual single-elimination tournament featuring Major League Soccer and LIGA MX clubs, kicked off five weeks of MLS vs. LIGA MX matchups in August and September, including the MLS All-Star Game presented by Target on August 25 and rounding out with Campeones Cup the last week of September.
The tournament kicked off this week with quarterfinal matches, including resounding wins by Seattle Sounders and Leon, a Pumas win decided by kicks from the penalty mark and a 1-0 win by Santos Laguna in Orlando.
Beyond the rivalry, Leagues Cup has taken on an increased focus for both MLS and LIGA MX clubs. Concacaf recently announced that Leagues Cup will have a qualifying slot to the Concacaf Champions League, starting with the new format in 2023, positioning Leagues Cup as an important part of the North American soccer landscape.
