VANCOUVER, B.C. (Aug. 19, 2026) – Houston Dynamo FC moved into sole possession of first place in the MLS Western Conference on Wednesday night, defeating the previous leaders Vancouver Whitecaps FC by a 1-0 score for the fifth straight shutout victory – becoming just the third team in MLS history to accomplish that feat.

Houston’s first dangerous chance came in the 16th minute when a loose ball in the box fell to midfielder Héctor Herrera, whose quick-reaction shot was blocked by an even quicker foot by the Whitecaps defender.

The Dynamo took the lead in the 34th minute when defender Franco Negri fired a 75-mile-per-hour, tremendously powerful shot into the roof of the net from outside of the box. The strike marked the Argentinian’s first goal for the Dynamo.

Negri took his chances from deep again in the 36th minute, trying to catch Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka off his line, but the Japanese shot stopper managed to corral the danger.

Twenty minutes later, Mateusz Bogusz nearly doubled the advantage for the visitors, as he found himself through on goal. The Polish forward slotted low toward the far post, but Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka got low and parried the shot away to keep the lead at one.

Vancouver thought they had found their equalizer in the 64th minute, as a Emmanuel Sabi tucked home from close range. But the Video Assistant Referee intervened and ruled that Herrera was fouled in the buildup, chalking the goal off.

The Dynamo would see things out from there, defending valiantly to earn their fifth straight clean sheet. Houston has not conceded a goal in 462 minutes, the second-longest streak for the Dynamo over the past decade.

Notably, defender Marcelo Saracchi made his Dynamo debut as a substitute in the 75th minute tonight after joining Houston on a full transfer from CA Boca Juniors earlier this month.

Houston next travel to face St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Energizer Park, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT. Fan can follow the match via MLS on Apple TV.
