In front of a sold-out crowd of 22,115 at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas fought to a 1-1 stalemate in the 29th edition of the Texas Derby.
For the ninth time this season, the Dynamo got on the board first when forward Erick Torres beat Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez with a low right-footed shot from 15 yards away. Torres outdueled Dallas defender Matt Hedges to get onto a long outlet from defender Adolfo Machado, settled the ball and then rifled his shot past Gonzalez.
FC Dallas tied up the score in the 59th minute, when midfielder Mauro DÃaz played a quick through-ball to midfielder Michael Barrios on the right side of the box. Barrios laid the ball back to forward Maxi Urruti in the middle of the box, where he took a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner past Dynamo goalkeeper Tyler Deric.
Defender Dylan Remick denied FC Dallas twice on a dangerous flurry early in the match. FC Dallas had a counterattack in the 10th minute, and after a cross from midfielder Kellyn Acosta to Urruti, who collected the pass and turned to shoot. Remick, who had stumbled on the play, blocked the first opportunity while on the ground, then quickly recovered to stonewall midfielder Michael Barrios on a right-footed shot inside the penalty area.
Houston nearly found the net four minutes later when Torres played a ball to forward Mauro Manotas on the right side of the area. The Colombian took a touch toward goal and fired a right-footed shot that barely whistled wide of the left post.
The Dynamo had another dangerous chance just moments before Dallas would equalize, as midfielder Juan David Cabezas got on the end of a free kick from midfielder Boniek GarcÃa in the 56th minute, but his powerful header skimmed just wide of the goal.
Late in the hot and humid contest, the rivalry boiled over as Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta and Houston forward Alberth Elis tangled at the top of the box, leading to a scuffle among several players that ultimately led to yellow cards for players on both teams.
The Dynamo will play in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. CDT against Sporting Kansas City at BBVA Compass Stadium (TICKETS). Houston returns to MLS regular-season action on Saturday, July 1 at Colorado.
