Three Things We Learned: Houston Dynamo 2, Seattle Sounders FC 1

1. This offense has some firepower, and they’ve only just begun.

The combination of Romell Quioto, Erick Torres and Alberth Elis caused plenty of buzz during preseason, but everyone still wanted to see if would translate to the regular season. Well it did.

Torres scored the first goal of the match off a free kick in the 20th minute, and most importantly his first ever with the Dynamo, followed by a firecracker from Quioto just before halftime. The team continued to generate chances through the second half and looks to be everything it was advertised to be this year.

2. No doubt the defense has improved.

Possibly overshadowed by tonight’s offensive display, the defense held firm to hold on to the win. This was a backline that was playing in its first official match together, with one player making his MLS debut. They did allow one goal to Clint Dempsey and were tested by Joevin Jones' speed, but they were able to keep Jordan Morris and Nicolás Lodeiro largely in check.

They were able to finish the game with a lead and secure the three points. As the season goes on, this defensive line will only get more comfortable playing with each other.

3. This team has depth to count on this season.

The substitutes in this match were Boniek García, Vicente Sánchez and Andrew Wenger. Last season's top goalscorer Mauro Manotas and regular defensive starter Jalil Anibaba didn’t even see the field, and projected starter Juan David Cabezas was unavailable due to suspension.

Going forward, the depth will be key to the rigors of the eight-month MLS season. There will be plenty of minutes to go around.
