Kid M3mito locks up knockout stage spot at first day of FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs

Houston Dynamo esports player Kid M3mito started the FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs continuing on the solid playing that saw him win the inaugural eMLS Cup in April, locking up a knockout round spot after the first day of action from Amsterdam.

M3mito opened with a 6-2 aggregate victory over CrewSC Nenad10 of Columbus Crew SC, and continued with three straight wins, also defeating Crafty and DW Dandelion from England in the second and third round. In the fourth round against the reigning eWorld Cup Champion, Spencer “FaZe Gorilla” Ealing , Memo took his first loss in 30 live matches – dating back to the start of eMLS Cup – in a tight 3-2 match. Gorilla took the second match 4-1 for a 7-3 aggregate victory.

The final match of the day was the fifth round match against MCFC Marcus representing Melbourne City. Both players entered the match up with a 3-1 record for the day, meaning that whoever won would secure a spot in the knockout stage. With an early goal in the eighth minute, Memo hung on to win the first game in a defensive battle. In game two, Marcus came back to tie the aggregate score at 1 in the 22’ minute. Despite some great strikes from Memo’s side, regulation finished tied 1-1 on aggregate. Marcus took the lead in the 94’ minute, but Memo responded at the death by slotting home the tying goal in the 119’ minute to send the match to kicks from the mark. Outstanding goalkeeper play by Memo lead to all three of Marcus’s penalties being blocked. Memo put away all three of his penalties to take the win and the round of 32 spot.

Tuesday will feature two more rounds of Swiss group play. For players that are qualified for the knockout round already, these matches will determine seeding. After the two Swiss rounds, the round of 32 will be played. The 16 players remaining at the end of the day will be qualified for the FIFA eWorld Cup and continue play on Wednesday for the Global Series Playoffs Championship.
