Houston Dynamo FC midfielders Boniek Garcia and Memo Rodriguez were named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week after leading the club to three points in the opening game of the 2021 regular season.
Houston opened the regular season with a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes last Friday at BBVA Stadium and Garcia kicked off his 10th season with the club as a defender, a first for the Honduran international, who joined the Dynamo as a brash attacking winger in 2012. A series of injuries forced Dynamo head coach Tab Ramos to reshuffle his backline and insert Garcia at center back. Garcia led the team with nine recoveries and finished with two interceptions and two tackles. Garciawas last named to the Team of the Week in Week 29 of the 2019 season following a 2-1 victory over Orlando City SC.
Rodriguez scored the opening goal of the 2021 regular season and his 20th goal for the club across all competitions. The Dynamo Academy product is the 10th player to reach 20 goals with the club; this is the second consecutive year in which he earned Team of the Week honorsinWeek 1.
The Dynamo travel to Oregon on Saturday for their first road trip of the regular season.
