HOUSTON (May 24, 2026) – The undefeated Houston Dynamo 2 travel northwest to face Portland Timbers2 on Sunday, May 24, marking the second and final meeting between the two sides this season. Dynamo 2 faced Timbers2 earlier this year at SaberCats Stadium, earning a dominant 5-0 shutout victory on March 15. Notably, the five-goal performance earned Houston MLS NEXT Pro Team of Matchweek 3 honors, with seven players contributing to the scoring effort, including 15-year-old Matthew Arana, who scored his first professional goal, and forward Arthur Sousa, who recorded his first Dynamo 2 goal and assist. Brazilian goalkeeper Pedro Cruz added three saves to secure the team’s third consecutive clean sheet, which was part of a streak of four shutouts to open the season.
In their most recent match, Dynamo 2 drew 1-1 on the road against Minnesota United FC 2 and claimed the two points after a penalty shootout victory, marking the second shootout win of the season. Forward AustinBrummett scored the equalizer in the 47th minute, while Cruz made three crucial saves in the penalty shootout, including stops on Minnesota’s first two penalties.
The result added to the team’s impressive undefeated start to the season, with eight victories and two draws through the first 10 matches. Houston, which earned MLS NEXT Pro Team of the Month honors for April and Team of Matchweek 10, sits atop the Western Conference standings with 28 points and currently ranks second in goals (25) and assists (18), while leading the league in fewest goals conceded in open play (four) this season. Additionally, head coach Jeremy Hurdle earned Coach of the Month and goalkeeper Pedro Cruz earning Goalkeeper of the Month honors in consecutive months for March and April.
Portland is coming off a 1-0 road victory over San Jose Earthquakes II, with Colin Griffith scoring the game winner in the 85th minute. Timbers2 currently sits fourth in the Western Conference with 20 points and a 5-1-4 (WLD) record. Noah Santos, Daniel Cervantes and Griffith lead the team’s attack with three goals each.
Individually, Cruz is tied for first in the league in clean sheets (four), while Brummett leads the team with five goals and Sousa leads the team with three assists.
Last week, Dynamo 2 signed Dynamo Academy product and attacker Samir Mohammad to an MLS NEXT Pro contract, making him the 13th Dynamo Academy product in Club history to sign a professional contract with the MLS NEXT Pro affiliate. The 18-year-old has already featured for Dynamo 2 several times, including making his professional debut last year on Decision Day versus Tacoma Defiance, while totaling 10 appearances (eight starts) in MLS NEXT Pro overall. Notably, he was one of seven Academy players called up by first team head coach Ben Olsen to join the Dynamo for preseason action earlier this year and helped the team win the inaugural Torneo de Tejas title.
