RGV FC Toros fall 1-0 at home to Portland Timbers 2

The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros failed to collect any points at home after falling to Portland Timbers 2. Portland’s captain Josh Phillips scored the lone goal of the match.

Fresh off a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup appearance with the Houston Dynamo, Todd Wharton had the first crack at goal in the seventh minute. Alex Mangels, goalkeeper for the Timbers 2, denied his shot by diving to his right. Two minutes later, Aldo Quintanilla had a chance at goal but his shot went well wide of the target.

With their first real opportunity at scoring, Portland Timbers 2 did not forgive and punished the Toros from a set piece. Portland’s Josh Phillips headed in a corner kick to give the away team the lead in the 14th minute. In the 20th minute, RGV’s goalkeeper Nico Corti denied Timbers 2 from doubling their lead. Corti was able to catch Foster Langsdorf’s header.

Rio Grande Valley pushed forward as they sought an equalizer. In the 23rd minute, Jesus Enriquez cut his way into 18-yard box through the left flank and sent in a dangerous cross. After an initial deflection by Mangels, Todd Wharton blasted his shot towards goal but was blocked by a defender.

The Toros kept pushing forward in the second half but failed to finish plays. In the 66th minute, a fleet of Portland Timbers 2 players obstructed Aldo Quintanilla’s shot. Wharton shot the rebounding ball but missed his target.  In the 68th minute, Bryce Marion volleyed in a rebound that came from a set piece but missed his target. Bryce Marion and Manny Padilla were able to compete a series of passes to enable Matias Zaldivar. However, Zaldivar’s attempt at goal was blocked.

The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros will hit the road to visit OKC Energy FC. The match kicks off on Saturday, June 16 at 7:30p.m.
