The Rio Grande Valley FC Toros could not bounce back from recent results and were defeated by OKC Energy FC 3-1. The Rio Grande Valley’s own Omar Ontiveros was the lone scorer for the Toros. Jaime Saij, Callum Ross, and Miguel Gonzalez scored for the Energy.

RGV FC Toros started the game off hot, pushing OKC back into their own defensive third. In the ninth minute, Matias Zaldivar crossed in a corner kick to Kyle Adams. Adams was able to connect with the inside of his foot, but his efforts were not enough to get past Matt Van Oekel, goalkeeper of the Energy. In the 15th minute, Jesus Enriquez headed in a rebound after Energy FC had spoiled a predesigned set piece off a corner kick. His header found an unmarked Omar Ontiveros. Ontiveros right footed his shot for his second goal of the season.

In a defensive error by RGV, OKC Energy tied things up in the 21st minute.  A defensive blunder had enabled OKC’s Jonathan Brown to go one-on-one against Nico Corti. After Corti had blocked Brown’s efforts, Jorginho James attempted to clear the rebound but passed the ball directly to Jaime Saij. Saij controlled the ball and shot towards goal for the equalizer.

A through ball left Hugh Alexander Dixon in a foot race with Kyle Adams. Dixon blasted his shot towards goal but was denied by Corti. Right before the first half ended, both teams had opportunities to steal the lead. In the 41st minute, Siaj shot towards the lower right corner of the goal. Corti’s diving efforts got the best of the situation. In stoppage time, Jesus Enriquez dribbled through various Energy FC players. His shot went straight to Matt Van Oekel.

Callum Ross scored for OKC in the 53rd minute. Ross headed in a Philip Rasmussen corner kick to get the lead for Energy FC. The Toros were close to finding the equalizer in the 58thminute.  A corner kick found Omar Ontiveros once again. This time his shot was off target and went straight to his teammate Guillermo Delgado. Delgado kicked the ball but could not get his shot through Van Oekel. In the last play of the game, Nico Corti went up to try to find an equalizer. After Energy FC cleared the ball, Miguel Gonzalez was able to dribble the ball towards the open net for OKC’s third goal of the night.

The RGV FC Toros return to H-E-B Park to face Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday, June 23. The match will kickoff at 7:30p.m.
